Approvals/Accreditation:
  • NAB Approval – #0122013-2.00-7008-DL for 2 clock hours for Assisted Living Administrators.
  • Maryland – Approved by OHCQ for 20 hour Assisted Living Manager Continuing Education. Click here for details on specific requirements.
  • Michigan– Approved by the Division of Adult Foster Care Licensing, DHS, for licensee/administrator yearly continuing education. Click here for details on specific requirements.
  • Pennsylvania– Approved by PA DPW for Personal Care Home Administrators.
  • All other states – Check your licensing regulations for your specific requirements. In most states, our courses satisfy administrator/staff continuing education requirements.

Introduction: Restorative care is a philosophy. Facility owners and managers who support this philosophy believe that the residents should be encouraged and helped to engage in functional and physical activities that match their capabilities during all activities of daily living. The focus of care is not just on getting the tasks done, but on having the residents do as much of the tasks as their abilities allow.

The purpose of this module is to provide you with the knowledge, skills, and tools you need establish and promote restorative care and to maximize functioning of the residents at your facility.
 
Objectives: At the end of this course, you will be able to:
  • Define restorative care as it applies to assisted living facilities;
  • Identify the relationship between OBRA guidelines and restorative care;
  • Acquire the information you need to establish and maintain a philosophy of restorative care in your facility;
  • Identify benefits of restorative care for management, staff, residents, and family members;
  • Understand the importance of having everyone at the facility (staff, residents, and family members) support the restorative care philosophy;
  • Understand the resident’s physical, sensory, and cognitive skills as related to performing activities of daily living independently and promoting maximum functioning;
  • Understand the importance of exercise and the characteristics of an appropriate exercise program;
  • Learn about resident assessment and evaluation as it relates to restorative care;
  • Identify community resources that can improve opportunities for residents; and
  • Acquire techniques for motivating your staff to implement restorative care philosophy in your facility.

Course Authors: This course was written by Dr. Bonnie L. Walker and Claire S. Cole, RN, C. The curriculum was reviewed by an interdisciplinary team of experts including: Barbara Resnick, PhD and Ellen Wruble, PhD. The program was developed by Harrington Software Associates, Inc, funded by a grant from NIA R44AG028194, Restorative Care Training for Staff in Long-Term Care Facilities.

NAB Approval Information: This educational offering has been reviewed by the National Continuing Education Review Service (NCERS) of the National Association of Long Term Care Administrator Boards (NAB) and approved for 2 clock hours.

The Long-Term Care Learning Center is a Certified Sponsor of professional continuing education with the National Association of Long Term Care Administrator Boards (NAB) and has approved this program for the number of clock hours listed under their sponsor agreement with NAB/NCERS.
